New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency (formerly known as DYFS/ the Division of Youth and Family Services)

92 East Main Street
First Floor
Somerville, NJ 08876
As the state-mandated child protective service agency, the Division`s first priority is the investigation of allegations of physical and sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment. The Division also conducts child welfare assessments to ensure the safety of children. Within the limitations of staff and fiscal resources, the Division also provides supportive services to dysfunctional families, both to protect children and to strengthen family functioning. Community based referrals are made to local agencies for services for the families. Out-of-home placement in foster care, relative care, when children are placed by the Division, and shelter care may be provided on a temporary basis for the protection of the child after all family resources and community based services have been exhausted. The Division works cooperatively with other state Divisions and Departments for the placement of children. The Division serves children, birth to 18, and ages 18 to 21, who have been in the Division paid placement on 18th birthday, and their families who live in Somerset County.
